Allied soldiers fraternising

Shown here are French and British soldiers fraternising during a lull in the fighting on the Western Front in 1917. The Tommy second from the right is holding a 7.7 mm (.303 in) SMLE Mk.III with a P/1907 sword bayonet attached: the Frenchman to his right - from the 94th infantry regiment - holds a 8 mm (.315 in) Mle 92/16 Berthier musketoon. The field gun is an obsolete 155 mm (6.1 in) Mle 1877 pressed into emergency service.
