Shown here is B-17F-DL Flying Fortress (42-29752) of the 96th BG, 4th BW with its right horizontal stabiliser shot away. This was caused by the left waist gunner accidentally opening fire with his weapon durnig take-off. Most of the crew bailed out in the vicinty of Grafton Underwood, the others bailed out near the wash, the pilot losing his life after the plane crashed into the sea.
