Shownn here is U.S. Marine Corps 1st Lt. Rolland N. Rinabarger of Marine Fighter Squadron 214 (VMF-214) Blacksheep in his Vought F4U-1 Corsair at Espiritu Santo in September 1943. Badly shot up by Japanese Mitsubishi A6M3 Zeros during an early mission to Kahili only two weeks after this photo was taken, Lt. Rinabarger returned to the United States for lengthy treatment.
