Kirk Douglas attended Midshipman School at Notre Dame University and was subsequently commissioned as an ensign in the US Navy in 1942. He served as a communications officer on anti-submarine operations in the Pacific, but was wounded in an attack by a Japanese destroyer. He was medically discharge with the rank of Lieutenant in 1944.
