Lee Marvin left school to enlist in the US Marine Corps as a Private. He was wounded in action in the assault on Mount Tapochau during the Battle of Saipan, during which most of his company were killed. Marvin was wounded in the buttocks by machine gun fire, which severed his sciatic nerve. He was awarded the Purple Heart and given a medical discharge.
