The Type VIIC boat U-597 left Brest on 16 September 1942 for its second war cruise, under the command of Kapitanleutnant Eberhard Bopst. On 12 October 1942, when south-south-west of Iceland, it ws picked up on the radar of Liberaor G.R.Mk.1 (AM929) of No.120 Sqd, flown by Flight Lieutenant Terence M. Bulloch on escort for convoy ONS 130. Bulloch dived and dropped depth charges, which sank the U-boat with alll forty-nine hands. This was the first success for Terry Bulloch, who became the RAF's top-scring pilot in attacks against U-boats. Ref: AIR 15/470
