The Type VIIC boat U-660 left Brest on 3 October 1942 under the command of Kapitanleutnant Gotze Baur and entered the Mediterranean. It sank a merchant vessel and damaged yet another before arriving at La Spezia, Italy. It left this port on 24 October 1942 for another war cruise but on 12 November, while attacking Convoy TE3 north of Oran, Algeria, it was depth-charged to the surface by the corvettes HMS Lotus and Starwort. Brought to the surface, it was abandoned before sinking. Two of the crew were killed but forty-two were rescued to become prisoners, including Baur. Ref: ADM 199/2060
