U123

Shown here is the Type IXB ocean-going sub U123 (ex-U67) lying next to the Tirpitz Pier in Kiel with the accommodation ship St Louis on the far side of the screen. The net cutter would suggest that this pic was taken early on in the war. The boat had three different commanders. First Kplt Karl-Heinz Moehle, who later became chief of the 5th U-Flotilla, the second, Kptl Reinhard Hardegen who led first attack (Operation Paukenschlag) against the United States and the third was Horst von Schroeter. All three were Knights of the Iron Cross. Taken from Hitler's U-Boat Bases.
