USS Coral Sea
Shown here is the 'Casablanca' class escort carrier USS Coral Sea (ex-USS Alikula Bay) ((CVE57, EX-ACV57) underway off Kwajalein Atoll during the invasion, 2nd February, 1944, as seen from the USS Manila Bay (ex-USS Bucareli bay) (CVE61). Kwajalein Atoll can be seen burning in the centre distance, from the pre-landing bombardment. other ships of TF52 can be seen at left, the the battleship USS Pennsylvania (BB38), in the middle of the group. In 1944 Coral Sea was renamed Anzio to release her name for the 'Midway' class carrier CBV43. Taken from Allied Escort Carriers of World War Two in Action.
