Gottschall was lost after an engagement with USAAF Consolidated B-24 Liberator bombers near Innsbruck,
Austria, on the 19th of December 1943. Gottschall successfully parachuted from his damaged Bf-109, but did not
survive two weeks alone in the frigid Tyrol mountains.
