Top half of page of The New York Herald, Sunday, August 2, 1909, giving coverage of the upcoming Grande Semaine d'Aviation de la Champagne at BTtheny, near Reims, France, August 22-29, 1909. Included are inset photos of several of the pilots and aircraft, the trophy, a poster, and a general plan of the "aviation ground."

Rheims was the very first international 'airshow'. Most of the great names of aviation at the time were there with the notable exception of the Wrights, who would have done themselves a lot of favours if they were present, although there were Wright aircraft that were flown during the events.

Dunno why this is in the 'Between the Wars' section...

Great pictures, I spent a few days in Reims and never sensed any connection to aviation, unlike Rouen Deville where squares streets and avenues everywhere seemed to be named "Bleriot"
