So I have this old book called Flying Aces of WWII where it discusses an Italian ace Maggiore (IIRC)Adriano Viscounti. It would seem for a time he was considered Italy's highest scoring ace. However the short article stated that according to his own log book he only shot down 10 planes making him the 47th highest scoring Italian ace of the war.
In spite of this there's still blogs and articles out there listing him as Italy's top scorer.
Was the above a hoax? The book was wrote in the early 2000's.
