I am currently reading the article Government Girls at https://www.jstor.org/stable/26907205?seq=1 and thought members may be interested - copyright prohibits me posting more. This article covers more that just American WW2 aircraft. It includes the Spitfire fund aircraft and similar crowd sourced weapons in multiple countries right back to the 18th century.
