The South Carolina-based deep-sea explorer who stumbled upon what he
believed to be Amelia Earhart's long-lost plane in the Pacific Ocean has
now confirmed his once-promising discovery was just a rock.

Tony Romeo and his Deep Sea Vision team – which captured a sonar image
of an aircraft-shaped object in the Pacific Ocean during a three-month
expedition to find Earhart's Lockheed 10-E Electra – confirmed Friday
that new solar images revealed the potential breakthrough was simply an
aircraft-shaped rock formation.

"While this outcome isn't what we hoped for, we are continuing our
search for another 30 days to cover over 1,500 square nautical miles,"
Romeo, a pilot and former US Air Force intelligence officer who sold all
his commercial properties to pay for his search, said in a statement.

"The global response to our initial discovery has been truly inspiring,
a testament to Amelia and the pull of her incredible story."

The pioneering female aviator, a household name at the time, disappeared
with her flight navigator, Fred Noonan, on what was to be a
record-setting trip around the world in 1937.

Oh dear. How many times has Amelia Earhart's plane already been 'found'?

Didn't they recently also find some human remains on some atoll they speculated belonged to Earhart? Was that also disproved?

Nikamuroro (Gardner) Island did have some interesting artifacts that seemed to be more than coincidental but not enough to prove they were from Earhart's disappearance.

For a few FACTS which seem to be ignored due to noone spending time re Kelly Johnson and friends performance curves for the Electra Earhart actually used- and for which some reason the earhart con artists refuse to mention or acknowedge.

The site found by searching has two related titles- and is copy right.
The point is a close look at the real range of her plane and reasonably documented takeoff weight plus head/tail winds would allow the plane to return where it was later observed, etc-- take the time to read all sections

Earhart's Disappearance Leads to New Britain

Earhart Lockheed Electra Search Project

and several years of reasonable comments

There was a claim some 10-15 years back that a P&W engine with Earhart's serial number on it had been found in New Britain about 90 minutes flying time north of her last departure port of Lae in on the New Guinea mainland.

Unless she turned back for some reason that does not fit with her radio calls.

Suggest you take time to read Earhart Lockheed Electra Search Project- details-
1) Was NOT an engine serial number- due to years previous ground loop and repairs- look up airframe manuf number..
2) Check the real range figures - MY estimate is that she was 250-300 miles short of howland due to
headwinds which became tailwinds on way back
3) radio calls and timing do NOT exclude her turnback time as a pre planned reserve fuel option as to when to turn back
due to copyright and ethical considerations to give more details here would not IMHO be proper- but please read all 6 sections of that project.

Also of note:

Several reliable and verified sources were recieving radio transmissions post-loss (July 2 - 7), which were triangulated to the Pheonix Island Group.

These sources are:
U.S. military radio stations on Tuitila, Guam, Midway and Oahu.

Australian radio station on Naaru.

Ships HMS Achilles, SS New Zealand Star and USCG Itaska.

Had Earhart turned back, wouldn't these transmission sources have been tracked to the west, toward or at New Britain, instead of remaining at or near the Phoenix Group?

Keep in mind the quality-capability of long range triangulation at that time- plus the use of a then ' new' frequency range, etc combined with weather etc. But why not take a close look at the data presented and put it into modern gps aircraft computer systems available for private aircraft and determine the effects of a constant- near constant wind from the east during the whole time the plane could/was airborne at t˙e most probable speed. In addition check out who set up the radio system(s) involved and who was responsible for setting up howland island as a landing strip. interesting in that that info has never been mentioned at Tighar or a half dozen ' gotcha ' or conspiracy sites- yet with the improvement in search engines on the internet plus advances in excel and AI ability to more easily handle queries and solve multifactor - analysis problems I find it interesting that apparently noone has either done such or has yet to publish such. I'm not a pilot- but my crude analyis simply shows that one cannot exclude the 'crash site' west of LAE.. Were this a class on such the term would be
" proof is left to the student "

Suggest a close look- analysis be done using

look for manuf line number

Keep in mind that not only are low frequency TX/RX easier (and more accurately) triangulated, but these transmissions were logged by experienced radio operators.

Want to know why radio silence was important for many operations during the war? See the above paragraph.

I can appreciate your insistence regarding the New Britain theory.
However, it has not been physically proven, so remains just that: a theory.

Hmm- the written notations on a physical map- the mention of a metal tag ( not yet found ) with specific Id numbers is not physical - but made up? Coincidence ? And not an area easy to get to without large costs means quit looking ?

hmmm Radio Traffic

West of Lae would not be on New Britain as New Britain is 100% north and east of Lae.

Hmmmm...

Aparently, I missed the part where they found and identified the aircraft and remains.

Again missing my point- please take time to read all segments and related comments.
While one could argue about the amount of evidence needed to establish location of crash, what is
shown and discussed is far more than any other site/group/theory and it now appears that one tv outfit
may be trying to get around copyright issues. U.S Military gfrave group is or has been recently in the area
since still finding ww2 stuff and bones. While one can argue that so far it is a Theory re papa new guina site
IMHO it is far better than any other so far. Try assuming they were 250-300 miles short of howland and flew per kelly johnson
data and make up your own mind re probability-quality- etc including comm foulups on itasca.

No, I am not missing any point.

The fact of the matter is, they have not found and authenticated any wreck site as of yet.

A missing tag, a series of interviews and a map is no more evidence of Earhart's demise than aircraft parts and a sextant case (found by the British) is.

The alledged P&W R-1340 engine is not unique to Lockheed. Fokker, Boeing and others used that engine in civil transport aircraft before the war.

So to summarize: New Britain is one of several theories.
