I am building a 1/144 'history of strategic bombing'.
I am trying to find diagrams/drawings showing the difference between the B-29 tail and the B-50 tail which, I believe, in 1/144 scale is the greatest difference.
The B-50 is the top drawing and the B-29 the bottom
The only exterior differences in 1/144 scale would be:
1) Enlarged tail fin
2) Redesigned nacelles to accommodate the Pratt Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major engines (which also makes a difference in the trailing edge of the wing between the inner and outer nacelles)
3) Different top forward turret
4) Different design of the framing in the nose glass
5) Wing mounted external fuel tanks
That's not the primary difference at all. It is the main difference in a model, though. The main difference is the B-50 has R-4360 engines while the B-29 has R-3350 engines. The extra tail surface came from the extra power requirements.
Aerospace Modeller Magazine had an issue that detailed converting a B-29 to a B-50 in 1/144 scale. The magazine went out of business but you can buy past issues from Sprue Bros. The issue you want is Issue #5 from the winter of 2007.
