Actually not Fw189 V1a but the Fw189 V1b. One of two prototypes that was an attempt to make an attack plane ( Fw189C ) based on the Fw 189 Uhu made by rebuilding of the first Fw 189V1 prototype, registration D-OPVN. The installation of offensive weapons on the Fw 189V-1b was not envisaged. Defensive armament consisted of one 7.92 mm MG15 machine gun.
At the end of 1938, Focke-Wulf withdrew the Fw 189 V1 reconnaissance prototype from flight trials in order to enter it in the competition for a new ground attack aircraft. Redesignated as the Fw 189 V1b, it featured a new central fuselage and armoured crew compartment for the pilot and air gunner. Flight tests conducted in 1939 soon revealed that its flying characteristics as a ground attack aircraft were unsatisfactory; the Fw 189 V1b was simply too heavy and crew visibility was insufficient. Following modifications to the armoured crew compartment and the fitting of larger armour-glass vision panels, the Fw 189 V1b resumed its flight trials. Despite an improved opinion of it by the E-Stelle Rechlin, the RLM still preferred the Henschel Hs 129 and decided against series production. During demonstration flights in Bremen, the pilot of the Fw 189V-1b crashed into the hangar while planning "blindly".
On 1st April 1940, Focke-Wulf proposed an aerodynamically improved Fw 189 which, as the V6 prototype, was to serve as model for the Fw 189C-0 ground attack variant. Although test flights with its Bordwaffen had been successfully conducted at the E-Stellen Rechlin and Tarnewitz, the RLM decided not to place the Fw 189C in production in addition to the Henschel Hs 129.
