I recall that one Saturday night I was working in the SLC-3 blockhouse at Vandenberg AFB. The spacecraft people were running some tests and I was serving as test Launch Controller and Spacecraft Launch Controller. Things were quiet and I looked up at the TV monitors. There were the various views of the launch pad, LOX side, Fuel Side, MST view from the side, and so forth. The last monitor on the Left was an actual color TV set, and the range had routed the signal of a ball game being played in San Francisco. The game was over and they were just killing time, and had zoomed in on a very clear view of the Moon; it filled the screen. I scanned across the monitors and then came the one with the Moon.

I thought, "The Moon? Why do we have the Moon up on the screen? We are not launching a payload to the Moon!" The really funny part was that the Moon looked perfectly appropriate up there with all that rocket stuff, but it was a ballgame, not a destination.

What's pretty epic!

Pooper broke

For those of you that have watched the Big Bang series, one of the characters (Howard Wolowitz), an engineer, designed a new toilet that was installed on the space station and later discovered it would "blow back" after about 10 "flushes". It was the first up at 11:00PM CDT last night of the several back to back showings of the series. Coincidence? Probably a great one. After Walowitz hopes he fixed the problem, using spare items on the ISS and the nebulous help of the other show's characters, the short denouement at the end of the episode shows the space station orbiting earth and the voiceovers have the following conversation:

ISS: "Houston, International space station here. We have a little situation up here. We'd like to make an unscheduled space walk."
Houston: "ISS, which crew members will be involved in the EVA?"
ISS: "Houston, we'd all like the step outside for a few minutes."
Houston: "ISS, I'm afraid we can't authorize that."
ISS: "Houston, this is more of an FYI call. We are basically out the door."

First thing I thought of when I heard the news.

A new record, the first toilet to break that far from earth…
