Hello everyone, I had the opportunity to dive on the wreck of The Tulsamerican last week off Vis Island, Croatia. The aircraft ditched in the Adriatic after sustaining damage from Luftwaffe fighters on 17th December, 1944. For those who are interested I have put more information and photos here

Inverted... and they lowered the landing gear to ditch?

That's probably why it is inverted... the main gear caught the water hard.
G'day GreenKnight, apparently the hydraulics were damaged, and they were trying to reach Vis airstrip, so had the gear down for a terra firma landing. Having to ditch at the last minute, they likely wouldn't have had time raise the gear so went in with it extended.
