Passenger speaks out after United Airlines flight evacuated at LAX for reported fire

A United Airlines flight was safely evacuated after making an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport.

Boeing 787 in this case suffered an engine fire and had to turn around to make a landing. No word yet on potential causes.

Pleased that this ended with a safe landing. However, the actual problem and possible implications are unusual. Transport aircraft have to satisfy a requirement for the proven ability of the engine Fire containment and extinguishing system to put out engine fires with a certain concentration of extinguishing agent and, with a second-shot ability. As reported, this incident was concerning because the Fire warning continued to be active after the procedures to extinguish the fire. This reported indication would seem to be supported by the evidence of continued smoke from the engine, even after landing. This is not a minor issue, the continued indication/evidence of an engine Fire after the engine Fire drills, keeps the aircraft in a Mayday situation.

That is terrifying, no wonder those people were running off the tarmac after touchdown.

The 787 has a fuel cutoff which I believe is manually activated. In this case, it seems like that system failed because the engine continued burning. I'm wondering what MiTasol thinks of this latest accident.

This is the same fuel cutoff that was theorized as a point of failure on the 787 crash in India. There was another automatic cutoff system that triggered on the ground on an ANA flight out of Tokyo several years back. It would seem that either there are problems wtih the fuel cutoff system or we are seeing a lot of coincidences.
