Remarkable!

As to how he ended up in a concentration camp rather than a POW camp, an explanation might come from the book "In the Shadows of War" by Thomas Childers. The book describes how an American B-17 pilot was shot down not not long before D-Day over France, was hidden by the French, and when he desperately tried to get back in the war, was sent to Paris, where his ID was taken by a Frenchman supposedly seeking to help him., He was captured and sent to Buchenwald. He eventually was able to convince some Luftwaffe personnel that he was a USAAF pilot and they moved him to a POW camp.
