Hi chaps,
With the advent of both Borders 1/35 Heinkel 111 and the forthcoming re-release of Revell's 1/32 kit, I have been asked by 1ManArmy to find the unit codes and aircraft for this photo with a view to adding it to the Revell set with all the tail kills.
What I already know.
The tail number is 3972 and a normal google search doesn't show anything.
However. Identifying a couple of dates from the tail shows that all are in March 1941.
The dates seems to be 7, 8, 11, 14?, 21, and what could be 24, 26 & 28. Some numbers are not clearly legible but 11/3/41 is clear enough.
Looking at ship losses for March 1941 and one particular incident stands out. Trawler Aberdeen bombed and sunk by Heinkel He 111 from KG 27 on 11 March. Other known dates show ships damaged or sunk by Luftwaffe bombers but no unit.
Is there anyone out there who has a working knowledge that can track down this Heinkel's ID letters? I believe the unit code is 1G so I'm half way there. I would like to do this myself on the revell kit.
