Of courser they would have punished him. He violated UCMJ in a very public and very embarrassing way, disparaging the officer corps of the Army, and the MK I Ball, Crystal, Foretelling was having some teething issues.

It started with a Navy wargame at Pearl Harbor in which he did not follow USN rules and buzzed the Navy's AA defenses to prove the uses of fighters for AA supression. He also predicted the P.H. attack vulnerability, bringing USN pressure on Army big shots to do something about "this rogue Captain".

These cases are always the bureaucracy protecting its own butt instead of considering the validity of his argument.
