Who here's a fan of sleek sports-car and concept-car designs? I'll start with an interesting concept called the Pininfarina Birdcage

These are concept drawings which seems to illustrate the idea of trying to blend everything in a very fluid manner.

It's got an unusual door configuration, opening up more like a fighter-jet than a car. The engine bay opens up in a similar manner.

The only one problem is that from many angles, it's difficult to tell if it's coming or going!

It was based on the Porsche 962 which was, in turn, based on the Porsche 917 through a degree of evolutionary ancestry.

It's a real stretch to link the 917 to the 962, but you could go as far as 936, which did share some componentry. Prior to Jochen Dauer's 962 road cars (which, as GTs, won Le Mans again, but now as 'road cars converted for racing' (mad)), Aussie Vern Schuppan did a few of his own. IIRC his first road car was displayed at the 1991 Le Mans 24 Hours, when genuine 962 Group C racers were still competing.

It's often forgotten that Dauer competed in Group C with his own 962, prior to getting the idea for making them in to road cars.
