Hi , and thanks for taking a look at this post.

Recently got the chance to purchase this interesting Main F4U data plate and was wondering if anyone here can advise me on where to look
in order to find the history of the craft if at all possible, im sure the serial nos etc should have some history recorded somewhere.
Any info or pointers to relevant sites you are kind enough to share will be very much appreciated,
Best regards Scott

Anyone one know what the "Cust. No." refers to? The FAA received an F4U-1A, s/n JT-200. Pretty sure that's not what it is but a nice coincidence. It was built in a lot with Bu.Aer Nos. 17697-17721. No other info

That's a cool artifact, but several things don't add up.

The manufacturer's serial number 3787 was an F4U-1D BuNo 57746

JT200 was manufacturer's number 1005 (AKA BuNo 17702) - often known at Vought as an F4U-1A or F4U-1B (though neither designation was official.

The Mfg serial should be the airframe serial, since engines (and their serials) could be changed as necessary.

If the aircraft was BuNo 57746, it would have had water injection, making the engine type an R-2800-8W.

At some point, someone will be able to explain this. Until then, I'm lost about the meanings of all this!

Cheers,

Dana
