I found the V-1710 2 stage compressor thread led me to exploring early multi-stage superchargers. From what little I can find, it appears that Farman were years ahead of everyone else when it came to superchargers and turbo chargers.

Has anyone got any details on the Farman pressure boosting research in the 20's and 30's?

Googling led to this 9 Ears engine. From "Les Avions Farman" by Jean Liron. This is a 1929 engine with a three stage mechanical compressor.

Farman helped Wiley Post with the design of the second stage compressor for the R-1340 in Winnie Mae for his altitude attempt.

 
An interesting look at supercharger 'state of the art" in 1935.
Like the two speed supercharger could maintain sea level pressure (zero boost) to 16,400ft.
This was what was being announced to the press and not what was hidden behind the "official secrets act."
Hurricane with a Merlin C engine was doing much better than that in 1936.

P & W seems to have used the Farman idea and expanded it to use not only the clutching in of the auxiliary supercharger but adding a two-speed drive to the auxiliary stage.

Charles Waseige was Farman's engine chief engineer. It seems that he worked in parallel for Eclipse (New Jersey) in the '30.

It should not be forgotten that, according to Arthur Alexander Rubbra himself, the 2-speed drive of the UK Merlin S/C was a patent purchased from Farman.
