Until the pros chime in - seems like that 'A' in question relates to the engine version, ie. VK-1A, vs. the VK-1 engine as used on the early 17s as wel as on the MiG-15s:View attachment 868307
I guess 'S' stands for rockets, but I really have no idea about the 'A'[

What is the source of this information? I have never heard of any MiG-15AS. There was an SD-21 aircraft - a MiG-15bis equipped with an AS-21 system with S-21 rockets (ARS-212) and an AP-21 sight. About 150 MiG-15bis aircraft were modified in this way.View attachment 868307

The first sentence after "MiG-17AS:" seems to end in "raket" so that seems to back up the theory.View attachment 868307

I apologize, somehow I assumed we were talking about the MiG-15. Here's my attempt to fix it:View attachment 868307

To expand the combat capabilities of the MiG-17, in accordance with the order of the Ministry of Defense Industry dated July 15, 1953, in August, the OKB-155 design bureau modified aircraft No. 54210443, designated SI-21 by the design bureau, with the AS-21 aviation rocket system. Similar work had been carried out earlier on the MiG-15bis (SD-21), but unlike that aircraft, the missiles were mounted on PU-21 launchers attached to the fuel tank mounts.
State tests were completed at the end of the year with positive results, and factories in Tbilisi and Komsomolsk-on-Amur began retrofitting aircraft designated MiG-17AS.
In 1955, the MiG-17F fighter No. 0115324, retrofitted at OKB-155 for the AS-21 weapon system, was presented for control tests at the Air Force Research Institute.

To state the obvious, "C" is the Cyrillic character for "S."Possibly a typo. The tiny photo says MiG-17AC
Yep...I took 6 months of Russian 50yrs ago. About all I remember is the alphabet and the typo reference was for MiG-15. The thread title has now been correctedTo state the obvious, "C" is the Cyrillic character for "S."
