Part of a series of photos taken by Flying Officer FJ Brock, RAF Official Photographer, from one of the Bostons taking part in this operation on 16 September 1942. Beyond the Bostons, the tiny specks in the background are three Mustang I aircraft of No.268 Squadron RAF which were providing fighter escort for this operation. It was a low level bombing operation against the Dutch port of Den Helder, where a forming convoy had been spotted earlier that day by a reconnaissance sortie by a pair of Mustangs of No.268 Squadron. The operation had been practiced and planned for some time in advance, just waiting for a significant build up of vessels in the port to warrant an attack. In this instance a largish convoy was seen entering the port to add to a number of vessels already in the port, making for a suitable target for attack. The bombing run was cancelled on the approach to Den Helder when low cloud and sea haze obscured the port - there was still at this stage some hesitation to blind bomb with the risk of large numbers of Dutch civilian casualties if the bombs fell outside the port. There was an RAF official cinematographer in another of the Bostons and they took footage that was used in a number of newsreels after the event, covering the preparation on the ground, take off with low flying over rural England and then out over the sea. Copies of the photos and the newsreel footage are in collection of the IWM London.

A/G was shooting when force-landing at Vendeville and hit Uffz. Hans-Günter Schöhl from 8./JG 26 and ebem killed Karl Borris dog.
