Consolidated B-24D-1-CO 41-23683 (93rd BG, "Jo Jo's Special Delivery") declared war-weary and became formation assembly ship "The Green Dragon" of 389th BG. DBR in taxiing accident at RAF Manston Jul 25, 1944 following undercarriage problem and replaced by Consolidated B-24J-55-CO 42-99972 The Sad Sack, Green Dragon II after combat career ended, became formation assembly ship for 567th BS, 389th BG after 41-23683 was written off. Named "Green Dragon II". Returned to USA.

I know the USN switched the front turret to an Elco model, but does anyone know why? The armament remained the same...... Just curious
 
The ERCO turret provided more protection had a greater degree of mobility when in use as a low level patrol aircraft attacking shipping.
B-24 was 3 feet longer with erco.
