What was the reason behind this. Fast transport is the only thing I can think of.

A two-man high-speed air ambulance. It was a pair of man-pods slung beneath the wings of a Lockheed P-38 F5 recce aircraft, and was tested during the Second World War. Cargp, not free so I am not sure it counts.
