I would like to find information on Japanese and Italian Aircraft. Right now I am looking for all information on Macchini 202 Folgore Fighter and the Kawasaki Ki 61 Hein (Allied Code name Tony). I am looking for any and all technical information on them. Also on the Ha 40 engine.

They both used an export version of the DB-601A-1 called the DB-601Aa, produced under licence respectively by the Italians and the Japanese. It had a smaller blower casing to detune the throttle altitude for export use. Funnily the idea was to detune performance but the real world effect is a lot like the Merlin 50 as opposed to the Merlin 45, it's low altitude specialised and has surprising performance in thick air. Real speed racer stuff, fantastic initial climbs and airspeed acceleration under 4000 metres.

they sort of have a flat spot at about 2000 metres but go pretty hard up to 5500 metres. Above that they're a no show but the Japs built their own fighters like that anyway. Italians didn't like it so much, or what I mean to say is they seemed to like the DB-603.

This motor also wound up in a lot of E-3 Emils in the Battle of Britain, I suspect something to do with a shortfall as it dragged on and production hadn't compensated. It was the DB-601N that was the hotrod motor though, idled like a dragster, had a lot of compression.
