After the war he went on speaking tours and loved returning the New Zealand as he had amassed a big following after the publishing of his book. I think he was on his way home after leaving New Zealand at the outbreak of WW2 in 1939. If he had stayed longer he would have been thrown back in prison again!

Anfang 1941 als Besatzungstruppe in Polen, danach auf dem Balkan. Aus dem Nachlass einer späteren Feldwebel der Luftwaffe. Nach seinem Rekrutenzeit in Braunschweig, Einsatz im Polenfeldzug 1939. Ende 1939 bis Frühjahr 1940 im Westen, dann Westfeldzug in Belgien und Frankreich.
