Hi all
I'm about to start painting my French Hellcat (Heller 1/72) but I'm having trouble to find out the exact colour.
I was planning to use the same colour as WWII American hellcats (Gunze H54) however I found that the French aircraft was painted probably with FS15042 which is way too dark in my opinion.
Any suggestion?
Cheers
Paulo

All sources I have gone through , say the Gloss Navy Blue , FS 15042 what is the ANA623. The equivalents can be the Humbrol 181 or just the Gunze H54. Other equvalents :

Pactra: A120 Dark Sea Blue FS15042
Testors/ModelMaster: 1717 Dark Sea Blue FS15042
Gunze: C365 Gloss Seablue FS15042

The French name for the colour was the Blue Marine ( Gloss Navy Dark Blue ) .

This is a great website for everything about the Aeronavale. Untitled Use Google Chrome for auto-translate as it is in French. They have great photos on every French navy aircraft. I emailed the website owner about an F4U-7 that I was having trouble finding info about and he came through with a lot of previously unpublished photos. Unfortunately you can't be a member unless you are a former or current member of the French Navy

Quick sidebar: One of my Tailhook friends was the late-great Toby Tobin ("Le Tobe" in the Aeronavale) who I'm pretty sure was the only two-war Hellcat pilot. VF-7 in 44-45, then an exchange tour as an LSO in 53 IIRC. He went to Indochina waters aboard LaFayette and cadged a few hops over the beach but don't recall if he shot anything. The TBM CO was Lt. Philippe DeGaulle (of the Paris DeGaulles) who Toby recalled as an excellent officer and aviator. Asked why he went navy, P DG said that in the army any success would've been attributed to family connections but in the navy he could make his own way.
