Nice one Karl.

ZERO refers to the year (2600 koki) the type was accepted based on the Japanese imperial calendar.
The Ki-27 for example is the Type 97.
ZEKE was the official codename assigned to A6M2s by the Allies in 1942.
The A6M3 was briefly called HAP, but changed to HAMP. Later Zeros were also just called ZEKE.
ZERO also refers to any single engined enemy aircraft encountered in the Pacific theaters of operations. Because exact ID can be challenging. And besides, who wants to admit you were shot up by a CLAUDE (A5M, Type 96 naval fighter)?

I knew about the calendar thing. I would be equally miffed being shot up by Frances.
