This made me laugh. I spent Christmas 1992 in Kenya supporting humanitarian relief flights into Somalia. It was a coalition effort but we were the only unit able to get fuel in Mombasa in the week running up to Christmas...so we were doing all the hauling until new fuel supplies were received by the USAF, German, and civilian air elements.
On Christmas Day, we were tasked to fly to Mogadishu, followed by a round-robin around various rough field strips to distribute aid to the agencies who were helping feed the local populace. Having time on our hands on Christmas Eve, we applied a Santa, complete with sack, straddling around the fin of our C-130. As we approached Mog, the captain declared a mid-air collision with a bright red object. ATC, having no sense of humour and failing to realise what had been said, gave us priority to land...they were extremely grumpy after we taxied past the tower and they saw our artwork on the fin.
