Hey guys I have an StuH42 Ausf G and I'm looking at doing a new paint scheme. But since I don't know the unit, I have no idea where it served or when they used these vehicles.
This is the emblem on the model. I have found a similar insignia on 9th Panzer Div but it's in yellow.

ok cheers
Francis

Actually not Panzer unit but Sturmgeschütz one. It is the emblem of the StuG. Batterie 742 formed in Summer 1943 and then became the 2.Bttr/StuG.Abt 201 in October 1943. The emblem could be either of the red or the yellow.

PS. The emblem was very similar to the StuG-Abteilung 303 (303 StuG. Brigade) but the background of the shield was of the red wile the sign was of the yellow. Anyway the StuG. Batterie 742 belonged to the Sturmgeschütz-Brigade 303 according to a couple of sources. But it doesn't look the StuG-Abteilung 303 used the emblem. So the StuG. Batterie 742 is the correct one.

Geez Wojtek you're an armour expert as well!! Yes it's a StuG III with the 105mm. So is that an artillery abteilung? DO you know which division? I think the 105 StuGs came into service in early 1943?

Oh sorry not 1941 for the date of the unit forming but the Summer 1943.
I have edited my post above and added some info there.

I agree. I found the same .... :)

My pleasure.
Actually, I have another question related to the StuG III Ausf G. I have a spare 'Lion Roar' L43 7.5 gun. I was thinking of changing the 105 for this 7.5. However the data I've read indicates that Ausf Gs were standard with the longer L48 7.5. Just wondering what the chances of one these L43s being on an Ausf G. Probably not likely....but not impossible maybe. A field replacement where an L48 was unavailable but an L43 happened to be in the spares bin... lol wishful thinking?

All assault gun battalions or brigades were part of the artillery and their uniform wore the red piping artillery distinctive color.

According to a couple of books I have read about the Stug the 75mm StuK 40 L43 gun was used for the Ausf E creating the Ausf F variant. However there were 120 StuG Ausf F only with the gun,. The entire rest of the F series and later, the Ausf G. got the StuK 40 L/48. So I wouldn't expect finding the Gustav armed with the earlier gun rather.

Ok.....also the uniforms were grey instead of black as well...I think

Yeah there weren't many L43s compared to the L48, so I agree very unlikely.... ah well I'll keep the derp gun heavy metal. lol.

At the begining they wore the black Panzerjacke with red distinctive color to distinguish them from the Panzerwaffe that wore pink piping. They later wore fieldgray uniforms also used by the Panzerjäger, that wore pink distinctive color like the Panzer crewmen, that retained their black uniform. Quite simple isn't it ?

So for my scenario in say Dec 1943 742Btn had grey uniforms with pink piping?

What was stated above applied to the wool black or fieldgray uniform.
But to complicate matters, were used twill reed green jackets with a large breast pocket and trousers serving as fatigue uniforms and often worn also in the field as summer uniform.
In this case, everybody was dressed in green !
