I had a four on the tree 1955 Austin A30. To get into reverse you pulled out the knob at the end of the shift stick and put it into 2nd gear

Interestingly enough, Germany used Roman Numerals for it's U-Boat types, too.

That's true Dave. Also for most of their WW.I aircraft.

My 1952 Fiat 1400 had four on the column and reverse was from neutral, pull toward you, then up as in first. Carefully let out clutch to be sure it was reverse, not first.
