If, hypothetically, v-3420 was more developed so that it was available around the same time as r-2800, how would you best configure a turbo fighter? Like the p-47, perhaps with engine in front and turbo behind the pilot. I'm struck by how wide the v-3420 is, though. Visibility below is a definite weakness. I wonder whether a p-39/xp-75 setup might be better. The big engine doesn't get in the way of pilot visibility.

Definitely like what the P-47 had, IMO. Pilot/cockpit can be located just aft the firewall - unlike what was done on the P-47 or even worse on the F4U - for the better visibility. Fuselage tank behind the pilot but still above the wing, like on the AD-1 Skyrider.
Engine and turbo system at the CoG eats a great deal of the CoG-sensitive volume that is needed for the fuel, and the V-3420 will require the similar amount of fuel as what the two V-1710s did on the P-38 (unless we want a fighter that the USAAF does not want).

It will still be a beast of the fighter.

The issue, I think, with the v-3420, is not how long but how wide. It's roughly twice the width of a v1710. 5 ft across, I think. That would make a pretty roomy cockpit. Unless of course you use that space to route the ducting. Perhaps on the sides of the pilot rather than underneath.
