A USAAF P-47 unit had moved into Germany and was at a former Luftwaffe airfield when the war ended.
The pilots were told they could rotate home to the USA as soon as they trained their replacements.
The replacements turned out to be US Army glider pilots who had received no powered aircraft training.
Amazingly, they accomplished that daunting task. No word on the mishap rate.
