E- I just found the Sept 27 Briefing map. It Clearly shows one route separated from the rest of the 2nd BD and heading for Gottingen as contrast with a perceived mistake in navigation.

It is a large file (1.5mb and if I reduce it for posting it will lose important resolution - so I will send via email. (I just reduced and attached a smaller image)

It shows 56th in lead, 355th next, 4th next and 361st in trail. The 479 FG picks up the B-24s at the Rally point NE of Gottingen. The 445th continued NE from Gottingen, while the rest of the 2nd BD hit Kassel then turned north-northeast to the Rally Point where the 479th theoretically was to pick up the 445th.

From the Rally point the course was due south past Eschwege to Eisenach.

Based on the Route I'm beginning to wonder if the 445th became the lead on the southbound leg. From the map they are 'uncovered' only from the IP through Gottingen to the RP ne of Gottingen where they theoretically made R/V with both the 479th as well as the rest of 2BD and Fighter escort. Yet all the encounters and MACRs indicate they were completely isolated and were hit east and southeast of Kassel in the Eschewge/Eisenach area on the southbound course at 1000-1010.
