i think it might be a translation error.

more like aerodynamic fairings around the engine seemed normal but a few years earlier many aircraft had uncovered engines

The exact wording antidrag ring is used in the B-17F E&M manual - see attachment. Nose cowl or cowling ring is another form of description of the same part.
