There was a cartoon on this subject yesterday but I will not link it as it involves Elon Musk and it therefore off limits.

I will ask the moderators to decide if it is actually acceptable given it is 100% relevant this near miss.

And then there's this incident, also yesterday:

An American Airlines pilot canceled a landing at Reagan National Airport on Tuesday to avoid colliding with a departing flight, according to a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

The incident occurred at around 8:20 a.m. and comes as the National Transportation Safety Board investigates a series of close calls at the D.C. airport following a deadly collision in January that killed 67 people between an American Airlines jet and an Army helicopter.

"An air traffic controller instructed American Flight 2246 to perform a go-around at Ronald Reagan Washington National (DCA) Airport to ensure separation was maintained between this aircraft and a preceding departure from the same runway," the FAA said in a statement to The Hill.

The number of fatal air accidents in the U.S. last year (257) was actually down from 320 in 2023 and 2022, but the media (and especially social media) isn't discussing that...

Well, the BBC certainly is discussing it (not US-specifically, but global air accident trends):

I didn't find the number for 2024 (they were down from 2023 for 1st 9th month of the year), but 40,990 automotive fatalities ins 2023, down from 42,514 in 2022.

Flying is still way safer; it just the news worthy ones involve more than 1 or 2 people.

So somehow Elon Musk made the private jet's pilots ignore clear instructions from the tower?

Elon has NOTHING to do with this incident.

Frickin moron politically-obsessed ijits.

I do not remember anything in that story about Elon Musk but I do remember a different story the day before on how he has offered a large percentage of FAA staff his retrenchment offer. FAA admit to being understaffed by almost 3000 air traffic controllers and Musk is asking some of those they have to quit.
