As part of the RAF Museum's new Research Programme, on 19 March 2015, Air Commodore (ret'd) Dr Peter Gray will speak on ''Official Squeamishness': The Air Ministry and the Bomber Offensive of the Second World War'. This lecture forms part of The Trenchard Lectures in Air Power Studies that are held in conjunction with the Royal Aeronautical Society and the University of Wolverhampton.

Talk Outline

This lecture will examine the attitudes prevalent in the Air Ministry during the Second World War towards the Strategic Air offensive Against Germany. Using the Bomber Command Campaign Medal saga and the publicity the campaign received at the time as case studies, the talk will look at the thinking at all levels and seek to establish just how 'squeamish' they were.

Please note that this lecture will be held in the main lecture theatre (MC001) at the University of Wolverhampton, Wulfruna Street, Wolverhampton, WV1 1LY at 18:00PM on Thursday 19 March 2015.

About Air Commodore (ret'd) Dr Peter Gray

Dr Peter Gray retired from the Royal Air Force in June 2008, having reached the rank of Air Commodore; he took up the position of Senior Research Fellow in Air Power Studies at the University of Birmingham on 1st September 2008. He spent his early career as a navigator on the F4 Phantom aircraft and, more recently, commanded No. 101 Squadron flying VC10K tanker aircraft. He has spent two staff tours in the personnel field followed by a lengthy sojourn in the Cabinet Office, several appointments in the Ministry of Defence and has served as Director of Defence Studies for the Royal Air Force. He is a graduate of the Higher Command and Staff Course and was assistant director on the 2001 programme. Gray holds degrees from the Universities of Dundee, London, Cambridge and Birmingham (PhD). He is a Fellow of the RAeS, the Royal Historical Society and of the Institute of Leadership and Management. His latest book, Leadership, Direction and Legitimacy of the RAF Bomber Offensive was published in June 2012.
