In my castle....
Which would suit best for a USN or FAA Wildcat/Martlet, during Operation Torch?

IMHO you have to check what model of the F4F Widcat was used by the units during the operation....

The US units ...

USS Ranger
  • VF-41 (27 F4F-4 Wildcat)
  • VF-9 (27 F4F-4 Wildcat)

USS Sangamon

  • VGF-26 (12 F4F-4 Wildcat)

USS Santee

  • VGF-26 (14 F4F-4 Wildcat)

USS Suwanee

  • VGF-27 (11 F4F-4 Wildcat)
  • VGF-28 (12 F4F-4 Wildcat)
  • VGS-30 (6 F4F-4 Wildcat)

The FAA units ... the model of the Martlet is listed.

HMS Victorius
  • 882. Sqn FAA (18 Martlet Mk.IV)

HMS Formidable

  • 888. Sqn FAA (12 Martlet Mk.II i Mk.IV)
  • 893. Sqn FAA (12 Martlet Mk.IV)

MARTLET MK IV
The F4F-4B was among the first aircraft to be handed over to Great Britain under the 1941 Lend-Lease Act.

The 220 Wright Cyclone R-1820-40B single-stage, two-speed supercharger Martlets were designated Mk IV. It also had the heavy three-gun per folding wing arrangement as US F4F-4s.

The best way would be to find a picture of the Wildcat kites both of the US and FAA squadrons in order to see of which type these were .

BTW.. perhaps Terry could provide more of info..... ;)

Wildcats of the VF-41 from USS Ranger. The captions say taking off for the operation and gun testing a while before the operation...
