I have read in another thread here that it was possible to have an asymmetrical load out for the P-38 with bombs and drop tanks. Specifically, does anyone know if it was possible for the P-38F-15 to carry a 1000lb bomb on one wing pylon and a 150 gal drop tank on the other? If so, might this have been used by the 27th FS in Italy?

Belly tank and a 1000lb bomb was a popular combination in the MTO - see attachment. There are plenty of other combinations as well. AFAIK the max was a 2000lb bomb carried asymmetrically. As you see the photo shows a late P-38 (J or L) used in the bombing raids against Ploesti/Romania. I'm not sure if the older models (F, G) have been actively used as fighter-bombers though.
Cheers!

Good info thanks.
You are welcome.
I answered a similar question in a different (modellers') forum several years ago and I remember posting other configurations with bombs and tanks (as mentioned before). Those photos were saved on the Photobucket at that time, but after the "big bang" I lost them. A bit of search through my archives gave me this:

I see that the first photo is from Fold3 but I can't recall where are the other 2 copied from. AFAIR all are from the MTO (Italy), because the question I answered at that time was about the European P-38s.
Cheers!

All later Lightnings but useful anyway. I'm modeling an F and so am interested in that type.
Yep, I know this from your building thread. As I said before I believe the earlier models were escorts only - don't have the hard proof though. Checked in my books, but this one doesn't say much or I didn't find the right answer.
