One of my books by Russian authors said the Russians flew their planes at full throttle normally. Which book will take some time to reread.

The Russians operated the P-39 at 75" MAP or more. That gave it more than 1,600 hp and it performed very well for them that way. When you are not paying for the airplanes or engines, you don't really care if they can be overhauled. When it wears out, go get another free airplane.

How?

1. LOTS OF TANKS!
2. Neither side had enough heavy bombers to even put on a decent July 4th airshow by USAAF standards. There was not much happening upstairs. The Mig-3 was quite fast at high altitude but had a reputation as a dog because the action was down low.

Erich Hartman described the P-39 as performing like the BF-109 at low altitudes.

Basically, the Russians refused to go up and fight. They concentrated on attacking the German ground troops. So, the Germans were forced to either come down and fight or stay high and watch their troops get attacked and killed.

They came down and fought, sometimes to their victory and sometimes to their defeat. In the end, the Russian learned from their mistakes and drove the Germans from Russian skies and lands. It's worth remembering that an enemy who doesn't care about the cost of victory is tough to defeat if his resources are deep enough.

It should be noted the steadily increasing pressure of the Combined Bomber Offensive siphoned off a lot of German aircraft from the Eastern Front in order to protect the homeland.

ETA: The CBO also siphoned off a lot of German dual-purpose artillery for use in the anti-air role, artillery that could have otherwise been used effectively in the anti-tank role.
