P-61 Fixed Gun Fairing

[MIflyer]

While I have seen many references to the removal of the P-61A top gun turret and its replacement with a fixed fairing housing four .50 cal guns, this is the first shot I have ever seen that shows how this modification was done. It seems that there were local unit adaptations as well as some with depot installed mods.

It looks like that mounting does not retain the ability of the turret to pitch the guns upward. And that is probably the only possible good reason to have the turret in the first place, for Jazz Music armament.

It was pointed out to me that these are fixed guns.

No turret.

Early on the turret produced yaw issues when slewed in flight. After that they made it static but they did eventually fix the issue so turrets where reinstalled.
