If a Catalina and a B-24 met in a seedy alleyway...
Trialled by the Marine Aeroplane Experimental establishment in 1943 to begin with, the Coronado exhibited a few unsatisfactory characteristics in the water, which warranted modification to the aircraft in the form of a ventilated step fitted to JX495, which underwent evaluation at Rhu, Helensburgh. It was found that the aircraft porpoised at sea and in tests with JX470 the port wing-tip float dug into the water resulting in serious damage. The ventilated step improved the take-off run but full-right rudder was still required to hold it straight, full aft stick to achieve unstick speed, and lowering the flaps to 15 degrees at 45 kts; take off run took 73 seconds. The type's reversible (in-board props only) Curtiss Electric propellers received praise, taking 15 seconds from full fine to reverse. Handling in the air replicated that of the Catalina but with heavier controls. By 1944, the RAF had decided that the Coronado was useful as a transport only.
Note in this picture the inboard four-bladed reversible and outboard three-bladed non-reversible props. The background has obviously been censored, defying identification of a location, although if this is an official MAEE image the location is possibly Helensburgh.
