Yumpin' Yimminy! Those guys ex-carrier pilots?

I suspect transporting them.
When editing at the Naval Institute Press, the question arose of F7F carrier operations. While it trialed on the Essex class Shangri La, it was deemed marginal as it was designed specifically for the much larger Midway class carriers. The ground support mission in Japan never developed, and virtually all Tigercat served in several Marine Corps squadrons after the war and later performed close air support, night fighter, reconnaissance and utility missions during the Korean War. Two night kills were recorded before being replaced by F3Ds. All focus went to jets.

Apparently, all but the last variant, the F7F-4N were not equipped with an arresting hook.

There's mention of it being too large for an Essex elevator, which would rule out Casablanca class escort carrier operations.

Is it sure that these are E-5 and not E-3? E-5 didn't have the wing cannons and I'm sure the second a/c has them.
On the other hand the partial Stammkennzeichen ?B+WK is with a great probability DB+WK. Another photo of this plane exists and matches the background and time mentioned above - January, 1940 This is a Bf 109E-3 WNr.1434 from II./JG 27.

The a/c behind DB+WK in the initial photo has the Stammkennzeichen DB+WN which again is a Bf 109E-3, WNr.1437.
IMHO the rest of the planes are E-3 as well.

Nice shot of pristine new equipment. Looks cold and crispy, a busy day for the black-men. Shadows are very long so not long after sunrise. Never mind, hand-winding the inertia starters will warm them up! Mind you, they have probably pushed them out from the hangar already. I wonder if they will warm the engines up with a ground run before the pilots arrive?
