Britain had intended to order 300 Reggiane Re.2000. This is probably the closest an Italian monoplane fighter came to combating the IJAF. Reggiane Re.2000 Falco I - Wikipedia

I'm not suggesting the Falco, in the absence of other significant changes in British planning, preparations and execution will change the outcome of the Malay campaign. But considering the fighters, how would the Re.2000 in RAF hands compare against the Nakajima Ki-43? With just two machine guns (in early models) both would be terribly underarmed.

I like the Re 2000 a lot but I think it's outclassed by the Ki-43. Maybe not hopelessly so.

The Ki-43 may was underarmed on paper, but it seems to have shot down an extraordinarily large number of enemy aircraft. The Re 2000 was not bad but I think the design wasn't fully developed yet at that point. I think Re 2001 (maybe with a Merlin?) or R2002 is a better match.
