What's difference between Phantom II submodels C and D?

I know that Iran bought dozen or so D varient, which were used for laser guided bombing missions during Iran / Iraq War.
In a minimalist was the E has a gun. But the E cam in two varieties, early and late.

The E has a newer version of the J79 engine which smokes less and has better dog fighting capabilities with slats, new radar and several other upgrades.

Oh didn't notice the first part. The C was a quick Air Force adaptation of the Navy B model. The thick wing for the thick (low pressure) tires and AF avionics. The D was a further refinement to USAF standards. The AIM4D Falcon replaced the AIM9 Sidewinder (err well originally) and more AF avionics. It was the true Air Force variant.

TBH, I still feel somewhat "confused" about American planes and different names for each branch of service! I just trying to imagine very first days, or even weeks of a new ground crew (maintenance, especially) in any "Base", total nightmare.

Just imagine to use a bolt from Airplane A for Airplane B, you'll be lucky if its noticed on final check, before takeoff. Otherwise, i have no idea what would happen, pretty sure not something good / funny.

USN and US Marines used a code system that included the type/manufacture and which connective system it was, fye, SB2C, S=scout B=bomber 2 (seconded one from manufacturer) C=Curtis. F4U F=Fighter 4=fourth one from manufacturer U=Chance Vought, SBD S=Scout B=bomber =Douglas. The letters don't always correspond to alphabetical listing of manufacturers F6F F= Grumman but the navy could never spell and the marines only eat crayons and copy off the navy's papers.

If the Air Force and the navy operated the same type they would have different designation. IE a B-25 USAAF is a PBJ USN or MC P=patrol B=bomber J=North American. (See they can't spell.
